Costa Rica is not difficult to love. It can, however, be difficult to edit.
Pacific beaches, volcanic landscapes, wildlife, cloud forests, and small towns all compete for space on the same itinerary. The temptation is to keep adding stops until the vacation becomes an exercise in packing, driving, and checking in.
For many travelers, a better trip starts with a simpler question: Do you want this vacation to feel effortless, exploratory, or balanced between the two?
A timely new home base in Guanacaste
Marriott lists September 30, 2026 as the opening date for JW Marriott Costa Elena Resort & Spa, All-Inclusive, a beachfront property in Guanacaste with ocean-view rooms and suites.
Marriott says the nightly all-inclusive rate typically includes accommodations, meals and snacks, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, entertainment, non-motorized water sports, children's activities, taxes, service fees, and gratuities. That can make the trip budget easier to understand, but “all-inclusive” is never a reason to skip the fine print. Room category, occupancy, premium items, transfers, spa services, and off-property excursions still need to be checked against the exact booking.
The case for staying in one place
A single resort base can be the right choice when the goal is a restorative vacation with a few well-chosen adventures—not an attempt to cover the whole country.
It tends to work especially well when:
- travelers value an easy daily rhythm;
- families or groups have different energy levels;
- predictable core vacation costs matter;
- beach and pool time are priorities; and
- one or two excursions will feel satisfying.
Guanacaste supports that style of trip. Costa Rica's official tourism guidance places the broad dry season from mid-December to late April and highlights Guanacaste's beaches during that period. The green season, from roughly May to mid-December, can bring lusher landscapes, lighter crowds, and intermittent rain. Regional and daily conditions vary, so season should guide expectations rather than promise weather.
The case for a split stay
A resort is not a substitute for the rest of Costa Rica. If the must-do list centers on Arenal, Monteverde, or another inland region, a two-base trip often makes more sense.
A balanced itinerary might pair a Guanacaste beach stay with a second region. That adds a hotel change and transfer, but it can replace exhausting out-and-back days with more time where the experiences actually are. The right split depends on trip length, flight schedule, ages, mobility, and how much moving around feels energizing versus draining.
Our rule of thumb
Start with the feeling, not the hotel.
Choose a single all-inclusive base for ease, togetherness, and a handful of curated outings. Choose a split stay for broader scenery and deeper exploration. For many travelers, the best answer sits between the extremes: enough structure to feel cared for, and enough destination time to know they truly went somewhere.

Quick Picks
Jamaica: three Sandals reopening dates
Sandals says Sandals South Coast is scheduled to reopen November 18, 2026. Sandals Royal Caribbean and Sandals Montego Bay are scheduled for December 18, 2026. The company says its other listed Jamaica resorts continue operating. Anyone considering the reopening period should have the exact property date, flights, and transfer plan reconfirmed before final payment.
Walt Disney World: two confirmed 2027 EPCOT festival windows
Disney has announced the EPCOT International Festival of the Arts for January 15 through March 1, 2027, followed by the EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival from March 10 through May 31, 2027. These dates are useful anchors for travelers who prefer to plan around a favorite seasonal event.
Punta Cana: a new adults-only all-inclusive
Hyatt announced that Hyatt Vivid Punta Cana opened August 31, 2026. The 467-room beachfront, adults-only resort emphasizes flexible dining, wellness, social spaces, and Dominican-inspired experiences. It adds another distinct style to the adults-only all-inclusive conversation.
Planning takeaway
Choose the trip shape before the hotel. A single resort base prioritizes ease; a split stay trades some simplicity for variety. Once that decision is clear, the right property is much easier to identify.
